Whether you have been experiencing symptoms or not, blood testing provides more insight on whether you have been exposed to COVID-19. The American Red Cross announced that it is now testing all blood, platelet, and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies so donors can be informed on the possibility of exposure to the virus. Those who donate through June 30 will receive a $5 Amazon gift card via email.
Even if a donor appears asymptomatic, antibody testing can help determine if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus. However, American Red Cross reminds donors that these test results are not used to diagnose illnesses or confirm immunity.
Dr. Erin Goodhue, executive medical director of direct patient care with the Red Cross Biomedical Services, encourages people to schedule a donation appointment even if they are not experiencing symptoms.
“If you are feeling healthy and well, please schedule an appointment to not only help save lives but also learn about your potential exposure to COVID-19,” Dr. Goodhue said in a statement.
Additionally, people are encouraged to donate this month as hospitals maintain an urgent need for blood donations for surgeries and other treatments that use blood products.
Appointments can be made on the free Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. Test results will be available within seven to 10 days on the Red Cross Donor app or the donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org.
