“I like to kick, and stretch, and kick. I’m 50!," Molly Shannon’s recurring character Sally O’Malley said regularly on Saturday Night Live. That declaration also befits the Pacific Northwest Ballet, which turns 50 this year.
PNB’s 50th anniversary season kicks off this September and includes six world premieres, a major PNB premiere from Crystal Pite, and story ballets Giselle and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as Edwaard Liang, Penny Saunders, and PNB founding Artistic Director Kent Stowell. (Plus, of course, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker.)
The golden anniversary season will open with Carmina Burana on Sept. 23. “Experience the unmatched energy, spectacle, and exuberant dance of this PNB fan favorite, complemented by the concentrated passion of George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante and a world premiere by Alexei Ratmansky,” a PNB press release noted.
