With these beautiful spring days we’ve been so fortunate to have, many of us have been feeling the urge to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. Parks in particular have been a major draw, and these recreational areas have been becoming more and more packed, causing some concerns in terms of health and safety during these times.

It is immensely important for both our physical and mental health that we take the time to get outside. But, in order to make sure we can enjoy these beautiful parks of ours while also keeping our friends and neighbors safe, we have put together some helpful tips on how to enjoy your local park responsibly during these times.

First off, be sure to choose a park close to home. With neighborhood parks often being less crowded than larger regional parks, these are usually the perfect spots to enjoy some fresh air and nature. Metro Parks even has an interactive map you can use to find a park near you. Just be conscious that normal amenities such as restrooms and picnic areas may be closed or operating on decreased capacity, so plan ahead accordingly.

Also, if the park nearby is seemingly a little too crowded for comfort, find another one to enjoy or come back at a less busy hour. That way, you won’t have to worry about you or others being in too close proximity to one another.

Be sure to wash your hands before heading out and limit your touching of miscellaneous objects you might normally not think twice about such as railings, benches, etc. And remember to pack that hand sanitizer just in case!

Lastly, remember to respect the closures. Metro Park Tacoma facilities, including zoos, playgrounds, sport courts, skate parks, and picnic shelters remain temporarily closed. Facilities are closed to ensure that you, your friends, and family are kept as safe as possible, so be sure to avoid these areas and find a permissable alternative. While we want to make sure that you’re enjoying these spaces safely, we also want to make sure that you aren’t feeling discouraged to get out and enjoy some Vitamin D. With that being said, here are some fun ideas of different ways to spend some time outdoors:

  • A picnic! Listen to some of your favorite tunes, enjoy some of your favorite snacks, be sure to pack a blanket, and head out to an open space to relax the right way.
  • Play a game of cards, catch, frisbee, or even your favorite board game outside with members of your household.
  • Go on a scavenger hunt! Make your own list or find a pre-made one online.
  • Read a good book in the sunshine!
  • Get artistic with some fun chalk art and bring some optimism and positivity to your neighborhood like others have been doing!
