Prom Redux

A typical high school prom is as quintessentially American as apple pie. But why was, for so many of us, the super-hyped event so…meh? Blame teenage hormones, a mouthful of braces, or unflattering fashion trends of the past. Let’s face it: most of us could do with a do-over. DJ Numbers is bringing Tacoma a “last chance to dance” with their Adult Prom Night 2021. Bust out your formalwear and enjoy the prom the way it should be enjoyed: As a confident, fun-loving adult.

Be a Doll, Give a Doll

Since 2007, The Black Doll Affair has made it its mission to see that Black children — particularly young girls — love themselves and feel proud of the families they come from. Equal parts self-esteem movement and community building, the Tacoma iteration of The Black Doll Affair promises to provide the Pacific Northwest with tools to empower Black kids and the mothers that raised them. As they say, “be a doll, give a doll” — and bring a Black doll to be donated to children during the holidays. Tickets can be purchased online before the event.

Donatin’ and Drinkin’

As the adage goes, it takes a village — and if you’re looking for new ways to be a helpful and productive villager, the 253 Club has you covered. Swing by The Red Hot, Tacoma’s favorite spot for hot dogs and beers, on Aug. 25 from 5:30-8 p.m. with new and unopened women’s hygiene products. The pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and other collected supplies will be packaged and donated to our local YWCA. And if doing your part to support local women isn’t enough to get you out of the house, $1 off your beverages (all day!) to those who donate should sweeten the deal.
